Geeks and Women

Sometimes smart people can be really stupid. For example there are two types of IT people. The type that enjoys spitting out tech jargon to non techies in order to make themselves feel superior, and the type the get laid on a regular basis. If these guys are so damn smart, then why haven’t they figured out the reason why they’re not getting any (cue 70’s porno music)?

The past weekend, I had another IT guy from head office to help me with a big project over the weekend. He’s like me in the sense that we prefer to help people with our IT knowledge instead of trying to make others feel inferior with it. In fact he feels that life comes down to two things, money and (cue 70’s porno music). Despite what some people in my industry think, knowing how to program a router is not all that important.

I’m reminded of the geek in a videogame store who thought he was funny by asking if they had any games on Linux. Guess what, while he went home to play with his Linux OS the sales person was someone doing (cue 70’s porno music). Dumbass.

It’s like a disease, alcoholics prefer their drink to (cue 70’s porno music), the same with drug addicts. At least people who are addicted to games like World of Warcraft cyber (cue 70’s porno music).

What I really get a chuckle at is how these guys then wonder why they’re not meeting anyone. Sure many 1 in 100 might find the girl geek. Let’s face it, a girl who knows JavaScript is HOT!!! or not. Personally I like smart women. A smart woman with attitude is even better. For some reason, I like the idea of “being put in my place” every once in a while. I like sassy.

I know, what’s my excuse since I’m not the dork who goes on and on about tech crap? We’ll I’m shy in person, and I lack self confidence in that area. Though it pisses me off when women are attracted to dumb ass jocks who call everyone “Dawg”. Are women really attracted to that, or is it just a physical thing?

We’ll it’s time to let everyone in on a secret. Geeks are horny bastards. Don’t believe me, check out Revenge of the Nerds. The proof is right there (and I don’t mean the Booger guy)

Geek Girls?

I’ve been listening to the White and Nerdy song a lot late, perhaps too much lately. It’s so bad that I’m actually playing the stupid game; right now my record is 427 in Intermediate mode. Someone should just paint a large “L” on my forehead and be done with it. Oh but it doesn’t stop there. I did something Uber Nerdy yesterday. I went to a COMIC BOOK CONVENTION!!! I went to the CalgaryExpo and to be honest, I had an ok time. They were advertising it to be the “Biggest Comic and Multimedia” convention, in Western Canada. It’s was fairly big but I guess I was expecting more from 50,000 sq ft.

The show itself was pretty good. There was a lot of crap I could have bought, but I told myself “no”. There were some interesting panels including such guests as Bruce Timm (he co created Batman: the Animated series and a lot of cool stuff after that.) and Paul Dini, who wrote a lot of stuff with Bruce Tim ( and he was one of the writers for the first 2 seasons of Lost). Then there was (GEEK GEKK GEEK NERD NERD NERD GEEK GEEKK).

The thing that brought a mental smile to my face was the women who were there. Some of them were dressed up as Superheroes and Anime Characters, some were in normal attire. Some with their boyfriends, some were with other women, some where solo. The point is, THERE’S HOPE FOR ME YET!!!

I know I’ve gone on about this in the past, but who would have thought that there were SO MANY Females that had the same interests as me. I still remember being the social misfit and being made fun of because of my love for anime, and the geek culture in general, but now to see female geeks...HOLY SHIT!!!

Does this mean that geek is a gender neutral title now, or is there a secret name for the female geek? I did a Google search for female geek and I did find femalegeek.com, but when I went o the site, there was nothing, not even a “Under Construction” or a “404” page. I didn’t have much luck after that either. It’s almost like they’re hiding because they know that they are such a minority, but I know they’re out there. Married or single they exist. I saw them. Even semi famous ones like Gail Simone, who writes comic books, (too bad she doesn’t update her blog), and she’s even going to start writing Wonder Woman. A woman writing a comic book where the main character is a woman; who would have thought?

The good news in all this is that there is a woman out there who doesn’t think my interests and hobbies are CRAP. I remember hearing some dumb ass whining to her boyfriend about him standing in line at the local EB Games. Saying stuff about how videogames are a waste of time. I kept picturing myself clobbering her over a head with one of those Guitar Hero guitars. Now that would ever condone violence against women, but sometimes you have to scream “QUIT BEING A SELFISH BITCH!!!”. There was another incident long ago where some girl was in a comic book shop and she said out loud, “Why do you read stupid comics” At that point she had everyone staring at her. At least she figured out that what she had said that time was dumb.

So now I have a new quest, to find the elusive geek girl. I know they exist; I just need to find one. I might even shoot a documentary about it one day. I wonder if I can get the National Geographic Society to sponsor my expedition, but that’s a post for another time.

My Twitter thing. The next big thing?

Everyone has probably noticed the new Twitter on my blog by now. Scroll down, its on the right and you’ll find it. Twitter is for Microblogging, that is when you only have a thought you want blog but don’t want to write a whole blaa blaa post about it. Oh and for the record, it’s “the next big thing”.

Ok everyone, stop rolling your eyes. The reason I saw this is because a lot of the Geek Culture heavyweights are already on it. People most of you never heard of like Leo Laporte. He’s so big in the geek culture that he’s been on CNN several times and now has a nationally syndicated radio show and he … well you can check his link. I’m not going to plug him anymore because while I’m listed him on my friends list, he doesn’t want to be my friend. FINE!!!.

There are major tech/geek people who are my friends though, people who follow me as well as I follow them. This includes Adam Curry. This guy was a MTV VJ from 1987 to 1994. He’s also big on tech and he is one of the creators of podcasting, his Daily Source Code Podcast rocks. He also follows me so when I wrote “If Chuck Norris blogged, then end of every posting would probably be "and then I kicked his ass"” It appears on his Twitter home page as well. I have the Podfather’s ear.!!!

Andy Walker and Amber Macarthur also follow me on Twitter. They both are former co hosts on Call for Help with Leo (who won’t follow my Twits) Laporte. Again both are fairly well known in the geek/community. Andy started an organization called Little Geeks, that rebuilds old computers for children in need and they also supply a internet connection so they can surf and hopefully inspire them creatively. Amber has since moved onto City TV news where she reports on tech related stores. She can be seen on City TV stations all across Canada and on CP24. Both Andy and Amber also have separate vidcasts. Amber does Command N and does Lab Rats. Both are great shows.

Chris Pirillo and Robert Scoble also follow my twits and they are also major tech players. Chris even has holds a tech conference even year called Gnomedex. He also has a podcast called The Chris Pirillo Show. Also at one point he hosted a show on Tech TV called Call for Help, which has also been hosted by that Leo guy who won’t follow my Twits. Robert Scoble has worked for Microsoft for their Channel 9 podcast, before moving onto Podtech where is now does his own show. Also, he and his wife were also mentioned in the death threats to Kathy Sierra. Oh yeah both are featured in a Jibjab cartoon.

Those are the presently famous people, I managed to get Vics hooked onto, but her argument is that’s there’s not enough room for her to blog her greatness. Give it time Vics. So everyone else should get a Twitter and make me your friend. I promise that I will do that same, unlike Leo Laporte. Pppphhhhttttttt
